FIFA 2012 HD
Cost: $9.99 | Developer: EA Games | Platform: iPad | 1.03 GB |
Underneath that massive download size is a pretty spectacular portable game of soccer. FIFA has always been a dominant force in the beautiful game’s video game adaptations, but it’s taken a few years for the quality of iPhone and iPad versions to come up to scratch.
But they have it down pat now. From the sheer weight of gameplay (50 leagues, 500 clubs, management mode and five difficulty levels), to the control options (works well on iPad, but for multiplayer, two people with iPhones can download an application that turns their iPhones into minicontrollers, allowing the big iPad screen to be shared), this is one of the better iPad games.
There’s three buttons that combine with a few basic swipe controls to make a game that’s easy to get into, but as you ramp up the difficulty level, requires an understanding of the game to be successful with.
It looks good, too, with smooth animation and decent detail in character models. There’s a couple of funny moments with the backgrounds rendering strange, but on the field it’s a very smooth game of soccer.
It’s good fun watching Wellington Phoenix slaughter Manchester United. If only we could do that online as well…
Pros: A massive, full-featured game.
Cons: Where’s the online play, EA?
Verdict: Soccer fans with iPads just found a new, great way to look busy during meetings.
