NTT Communications is expanding its IP network and services into one of the world's fastest-growing markets: Brazil.
Two of its divisions -- NTT America and NTT do Brasil -- announced Monday that they are building a network Point of Presence (POP) in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The new POP will be online in October.

NTT America said it has several gaming, social media and content websites lined up as customers of the new Brazilian POP. Most of these customers are interested in purchasing Gigabit and 10 Gigabit Ethernet connections.
"We've had business in and out of South America, but most customers are connected to us in the United States on our own infrastructure in Miami, New York, Los Angeles or Dallas today," says Michael Wheeler, vice president of NTT's global IP network business unit. "Over the last couple of years, our customers have asked specifically about Brazil and about South America as a whole."
Wheeler says interest in high-speed connectivity to Brazil is growing because of the upcoming World Cup in 2014 and the Summer Olympics in 2016. "Brazil is the epicenter of the region from an overall economic perspective," Wheeler says.
Wheeler says he expects NTT to build POPs in other areas, such as Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Buenos Aires, Argentina. "This is the first step of several that we'll be taking in the region over time," he adds. "We hope to have three or four more POPs in South America in two years."
NTT made its announcement at the Futurecomm Brazil show, which is being held in Sao Paulo this week.
