Scholastic New Media has introduced new charges for resellers ordering less than $1000 worth of software from the distributor.
Under the new system, which becomes effective from the middle of this month, orders under $1000 will attract an $11 freight fee.
"We brought in the order fee because we are paying per consignment with the carrier," explained Scholastic's operations manager Matthew Cross. "We haven't charged freight for quite some time, but a lot of our suppliers charge for freight regardless of the order. We wanted to create an opportunity for resellers who are able to consolidate their orders. Is it urgent enough to send straight away, or can they hold off until they have a large enough order?"
Scholastic will continue to review the plan and make it as usable to resellers as possible, he said.
Cross explained the decision was based on balancing the speed of delivery with the costs of freight.
"We tried to retain the free freight idea, but feedback on the delivery was a bit negative. These days shipments within 24 hours are very much expected, so now we ship everything via a courier service"
