Google Maps is probably one of the most useful applications to be bundled with the iPhone, as it makes traversing new and unfamiliar locations a painless experience.
However, that convenience comes at a price of data charges, as Google Maps retrieves the maps from the Internet.
Realising that some users want to conserve their mobile data and/or want access to their maps when there is no steady access to the Internet, OffMaps 2 allows the user to access searchable maps wherever they are offline and abroad.
OffMaps 2 uses the crowd-sourced OpenStreetMap directory, commonly referred to as the Wikipedia of maps, and the app stores the maps directly on the device for offline use.
Two maps are included in the app purchase price, and additional maps can be purchased at $0.99 per three downloads.
Pros: Allows for offline access to maps, ensuring you don’t incur data roaming charges.
Cons: OpenStreetMap’s range of maps are not as detailed and comprehensive as the ones provided by Google Maps.
Verdict: Whether you are navigating a metropolis or the country side, OffMaps 2 will ensure you know where you are without the need for Internet.
