Cost: Free | Developer:Al Jazeera | Platform: iPhone/ iPad| Version 1.2.9 | 2.1 MB | iOS 4.0
In recent years, Al Jazeera has become one of the better sources of news from not only the Middle East, but the world at large. So it’s just as well that the App is also one of the better news Apps available on iOS devices.
On booting the App up, you’re taken straight into the streaming video section. The quality of the video being streamed isn’t high (it’s about what you’d get on most YouTube videos), and blown up on the iPad’s big screen, this isn’t a very attractive start, but from there things get better.
The App itself is laid out nicely, easy to navigate, and refreshingly minimalistic. It’s easy to find what you’re looking for with this App, because you’re not bombarded with unnecessary filler.
Other than that, there’s not a whole lot to say. It’s impressive to see a news app that doesn’t rely on bombarding readers with ads, but still provide good quality journalism. Apps like the New York Times might look slightly better, but any news junkie is going to want this anyway.
Pros: Light on the ads, good quality journalism, easy to navigate.
Cons: Doesn’t quite reach the aesthetic heights of the classic New York Times design.
Verdict: Probably the best free news application out there.
