Services Briefs: Kaz, Sun, MSPs

KAZ changes name

KAZ Computer Services Limited changed its name last month to reflect the size of the company, its broader service offerings and its operating structure, according to managing director Peter Kazacos. The company has become KAZ Group Limited and will continue to operate with the brands KAZ Computer Services, Aspect Computing, Australian Administration Services, Ausdata and Fundi Software. KAZ recently paid over $200 million to acquire application development giant Aspect Computing.

Sun opens up StarOffice

Sun Microsystems is aiming to attract a wider audience for its "StarOffice" productivity software by offering an enhanced version as a service. A less sophisticated version of the product will still be available for free download from, the open-source community sponsored by Sun. StarOffice is an office suite that includes word processing, spreadsheet, Web publishing and database applications. Mike Rogers, vice president of desktop and office productivity, said Sun discovered that large customers would not standardise on a product without support. The software will be available in May and will be sold at under $US100 in retail stores, and at significant volume discounts to large enterprises via a licensing model.

MSPs go mainstream

The managed service provider (MSP) model has been all the rage in IT marketing circles and the latest US-based research from analyst Meta Group suggests there is actually some activity beyond the hype. One indicator Meta used to back up its claim was that 12 months ago, most surveyed end users were unfamiliar with the acronym. Now 75 per cent of users surveyed are familiar with the concept, and 74.5 per cent are considering outsourcing in such a fashion. In Australia, the MSP model has been particularly prevalent among telcos and service providers in the areas of storage and IT security.
