A friend of mine lost his iPad 2 last weekend. He made calls to Apple, his carrier and even the police in hope of ever seeing it again.
As an avid reader of ARN, he asked me one simple question that I could not answer. With all the apps that we have come up with, why have we not covered one that could have allowed him to track his device down and find it?
I own an Apple mobile device and the thought of losing it itself made me uncomfortable – I am sure you all feel the same way too. So this time around, instead of advising our readers to download fancy apps that might aid in facilitating business or making daily tasks easier, ARN features one that links your Apple mobile device to you – the Find My iPhone app.
Having the Find My iPhone app set up allows you to trace and locate your iPhone or iPad via the MobileMe subscription.
In the event that your device goes missing, you can install the app on another iOS device, launch it and log on with your Apple ID. You will then be able to see where your device’s current location on a map. You can enable it to play a sound even if the device is set on silent mode, display a message or even remotely lock the device.
If you feel that the device will not be returned, you can choose to permanently delete all the information on it.
The latest version is designed to send out an email for offline devices once it comes online and is located.
Pros: Allows the device to have a continual connection to the Apple server for real-time tracking.
Cons: Enables you to track the device only when the device is on, registered to a Wi-Fi network and has MobileMe’s settings enabled.
Verdict: Provides a higher possibility of tracking down your lost iPhone or iPad.
