APP OF THE DAY: iBook

"For daily or long distance travelling it’s a perfect way to get a good read

iBook
Cost: Free | Developer: Apple | Platform: iPhone, iPad, iPod touch| Version 1.3 | 15.3MB | Requires Android 3.0.3 and up

This is a basic 101 app for anybody who wants a portable book collection.

And there’s plenty to like about it. Blockbuster books are relatively cheap compared to bookstore prices, some older - and often classic – books are either free or $0.99, the selection is huge, the downloads are easy to read – even on an iPhone (and I don’t have fabulous eyesight) and there appears to be titles on just about everything.

For instance, I fly fish a lot and there is an interesting selection of title, several of which could be useful when I’m away on a trip and don’t want to lug a book around.

Tech heads and business people will find plenty to keep them amused or even educated. The sci fantasy addict in me loves I can get just every title I might to get my fingers on –and, again, some real classic for next to nothing.

iBook is, of course, perfect for the iPad … but I haven’t got to the point yet where I’m willing to substitute a real book for a tablet when I’m reading in bed or on the couch. However, for daily or long distance travelling it’s a perfect way to get a good read.

Pros: Easy to use; good selection; cheap books.

Cons: Not many. You can’t share with anybody else or make folders within folders but I’m nitpicking here.

Verdict: Take a library anywhere and everywhere.
