APP OF THE DAY: Zinio Reader

"Browsing is easy albeit a little slow"

Zinio Magazine Newsstand & Reader
Cost: Free | Developer:Zinio LLC | Platform: iPad/iPhone/Android | Version 1.9.7 | 9.7 MB | iOS 4.0 tested

The iPad is a great way to read magazines, and Zinio is the virtual equivalent of a newsagency.

Jumping into the in-app shop, there’s a huge range of magazines available covering everything from Maxim through to Macworld and National Geographic. There’s even some local magazines, such as Marketing Mag.

Browsing is easy albeit a little slow, and individual issues of the magazine, or whole subscriptions, can be purchased via credit card or PayPal. Those are downloaded to the application, so make sure you’ve got plenty of space on your iPad if you plan on reading a lot of magazines.

The reading experience is as you’d expect, with pinch to zoom and a smooth scrolling action between pages. Zinio magazines can include interactive elements if the publishers would like, but most don’t.

Pros: Huge range of magazines, and the app is a clutter-free way to read them. Most of the magazines also end up cheaper when you buy them digitally.

Cons: The shopping experience is a little clunky, and the magazine publishers rarely take full advantage of the interactive capabilities of the iPad.

Verdict: For people who like magazines, this is a great option.
