Harris expands online

Coles Myer subsidiary Harris Technology will integrate the software of ASX-listed developer Multiemedia to offer its customers an online Web development/e-commerce solution. Multiemedia's Web site construction tool (ZoneBuilder) has been incorporated into the new service, named Harris Web Builder, which will provide users with a one-stop shop for do-it-yourself Web development. Available through the Harris Technology Web site, the new service will allow small and medium businesses that buy their IT goods from Harris to also contract the reseller to build Web sites.

Jim's Web engine

Former Siltek manager Hugh Evans is keeping himself very busy at his new venture, Happen Business. The vendor has announced a new software product specifically designed for resellers, named "Jim2 Web Engine". The Jim2 series of products are all based on Microsoft SQL server technology, and allow resellers to manage their supply and customer relationships both on and offline. The new "Web engine" product helps resellers build a fully functional online store.

IBM gaining on BEA

IBM recorded far more new licence revenue growth than any other application server software vendor last year, but BEA Systems continues to lead the market, according to Gartner Dataquest. IBM outpaced the market with 71 per cent new licence revenue growth, giving it a 31 per cent share of the market, up from 22 per cent in 2000. Rival BEA Systems increased its market share by 1 per cent to 34 per cent in 2001 with revenue growing 2 per cent. A recent report from IDC concluded that the application server software market will peak in 2003, yielding a compound annual growth rate of 50.1 per cent from 2001 to 2006. But the analysts warn the good times won't roll on forever - the core product is fast becoming a commodity item, with open-source suppliers and even major vendors such as HP offering it free to encourage the growth of Web services.
