Updated: Ingram inks RIM BlackBerry distribution deal

The distributor will have access to BlackBerry smartphones and the latest PlayBook tablet

Ingram Micro has landed a distribution deal with Research in Motion (RIM) taking on BlackBerry smartphones and the new PlayBook tablet.

The line up will also include BlackBerry Enterprise Server, BlackBerry Mobile Voice Systems and Technical Support Services (T-Support).

“They have consistently demonstrated an ability to deliver innovative solutions to the market – both to consumers and enterprise end-users,” Ingram Micro A/NZ vice-president and managing director, Jay Miley, said in statement. “As growth in mobile technologies continues to increase, we see great opportunities for this partnership, and look forward to working closely alongside RIM to extend its reach into the market.”

Ingram joins Brightpoint in the distribution stable.

RIM A/NZ managing director, Adele Beachley, said the agreement with Ingram marked a significant expansion of its distribution network in the local market. The decision to partner with them was due to its experience and reach in both the enterprise and consumer channel markets.

"RIM will work closely with distributors to support training and incentive programs for retailers who are new to the BlackBerry range of devices," Beachley said.

"With Ingram Micro has come launch partner Harvey Norman, which is obviously a significant addition and will bring the BlackBerry PlayBook to many customers across the country. RIM is working with other retailers and carriers on their launch plans."

The PlayBook tablet is due to touch down in the Australian market on June 20. It will be available in three Wi-Fi models with 16GB, 32GB or 64GB of memory.

It will start at $579 for the entry level 16GB model, $689 for the 32GB model and $799 for the 64GB model. Harvey Norman, Telstra, Optus and Vodafone will be selling the tablet machine.

According to RIM, carriers will announce their own availability and pricing "closer to their launch date."
