Sony Electronics, a division of Sony, plans to announce Thursday a new all-in-one computing device that combines aspects of a desktop PC and a home entertainment system, according to a spokeswoman. The company declined to comment on the specifics of the device, which is scheduled to be unveiled Thursday afternoon at a press event here.
Sony suffered a setback recently in the beyond-the-PC space: Despite strong reviews from analysts, Sony's eVilla Internet appliance died less than two months after its launch. The $US499 device offered users access to e-mail, news and multimedia content. The eVilla was scrapped because it didn't live up to Sony's stability and usability expectations, a spokesman said at the time.
