SingTel’s second commercial satellite lifts off

ST-2 satellite to bring expanded coverage throughout Asia

Comments

Singapore Telecommunication Limited (SingTel), Asia-Pacific’s largest provider of fixed and mobile satellite solutions, has successfully launched its new ST-2 satellite.

Following a smooth lift-off from Kourou, French Guiana, at 4:38am Singapore time, the Ariane 5 ECA rocket transported the satellite to a transfer orbit of 250km above the earth before it separated from the rocket 27 minutes later.

“This is an exciting milestone for SingTel,” SingTel Group CEO Chua Sock Koong said. “Satellite services play an important role in SingTel’s overall vision for the Corporate Business market, enabling us to lead and shape key markets such as the Maritime, Oil & Gas, Media & Broadcast and Logistics industries.”

The Melco-built satellite is a joint venture between SingTel and Chunghwa Telecom to meet growing customer need for fixed and mobile satellite services.

ST-2’s high powered beams and powerful switching capabilities will offer a high level of flexibility when meeting the demands of regions such as the Middle East, Central Asia, Indian sub-continent and South-East Asia.

The ST-2 satellite is almost twice as powerful as SingTel’s first ST-1 satellite that was launched in 1998, and is expected to provide 20 percent more transponder capacity and a wider coverage footprint.

ST-1 will initially complement ST-2 before being replaced.
