CA cuts hit Australia

The global staff cuts announced last Thursday by Computer Associates made their mark on the company's Australian operations yesterday, with 35 personnel given the golden shake.

CA announced it would trim 900, or 5 per cent, off its global staff, leaving its total number of employees at 17,000. At the time, CA president and CEO Sanjay Kumar said the move "reflects the complex realities that our company and many other companies are faced with yesterday."

On the home front, CA Australia/NZ marketing director Tony Fernandez-Stoll whittled down reports suggesting up to as many as 50 staff in Australia would go.

"The reductions were consistent with international [directives] of about 5 per cent," Fernandez-Stoll told ARN. "The changes have been made uniformly across the business."

"That number is more like 35," he said.

Fernandez-Stoll pledged CA's continued commitment to the channel, claiming customer service and channel partnerships would not be affected.

The retrenchments, which include well-known CA spokesperson and media relations manager David Sanday, follow nearly a year after CA announced its new business model. The business model provides customers with the flexibility to pay licence fees on a month-by-month subscription basis.
