IBM's India research centre begins operations

IBM's new India research centre, which opened yesterday, will focus on developing software for weather forecasting, electronic commerce, Internet-based collaboration, supply-chain management and distribution, embedded systems, cellular and mobile telephony systems and distance learning.

The India Solutions Research Centre in Delhi, to operate in association with the Indian Institute of Technology, will have 40 researchers and 40 students, IBM said today in a statement.

The Centre was created with an investment of $US25 million over a five-year period. Another $US10 million has been set aside for grants and fellowships to leading Indian institutions.
