~ Australian-developed Application Gives Fast & Reliable Online Access to 211,000 Books in Eight Libraries ~

Sydney, Australia -- March 24, 2004 -- Cairns City Council has upgraded its libraries to a new, innovative management system -- Libero, an Australian-developed application based on InterSystems' post-relational CACHÉ database -- offering residents improved facilities and allowing the libraries to provide new services including 24-hour access to catalogues and reservations.

Cairns Council has eight libraries, with 67 staff and 55,000 members. The new Libero Library Management System gives online access to around 211,000 books in the collection, as well as information on a range of new and upgraded features, services and facilities available throughout the libraries.

Having carried out an extensive review of available options, Cairns chose Libero as the Library Management System that best met their requirements. It integrates a range of modules for immediate availability, such as Acquisitions, Membership, Cataloguing, Circulation and Inter-library Loans. Libero also includes facilities for Web Online Public Access Catalogue, which is customisable to reflect the look and style of each library.

Veronica Barlow is Team Leader for IS Support at Cairns City Council and was the project manager for the new library system. "We started by compiling a list of functionality requirements, the most important of which were a graphical user interface, a strong module for circulation management and facility for Web Online Public Access Catalogue. We also wanted a system which would be able to grow and develop with us as our requirements change," said Ms Barlow.

The simple Council libraries of old are rapidly being replaced by sophisticated, purpose-built facilities to meet the requirements and lifestyle of today's users. Now more than ever, users want quick, convenient access to library services, and libraries are fulfilling a wide range of education, business and visitor expectations in addition to lending books. To meet user requirements, the modern library depends on its information management systems, the software which not only runs the administrative aspect of the library, but gives visitors quick and easy access to information and services.

Kerrie Still, the libraries' Manager for the City of Cairns explained that "Library members today want to play a more active role in accessing and managing their own record details. Using Libero's Member Services option, our members are placing their own reserves, which has significantly increased the number of reservations, cancelling items they no longer require and directly placing their Interlibrary Loan requests. This frees up library staff to assist with more complex requests allowing us to provide new additional services."

For the library's Information System support group, a key benefit is the low maintenance associated with the CACHÉ database. "We are very pleased with CACHÉ. It has proven to be extremely robust in operation and intuitive for support purposes. In fact, prior to deciding on Libero, we called other InterSystems customers and spoke to the IS support people. They all said they were very happy with CACHÉ's speed and performance and emphasised its low maintenance requirements. This was obviously important to us, in maintaining consistent IT support for the nine branches of the Service," said Ms Still.

From Libero's point of view, the reliability offered by CACHÉ is of major importance. "It's easy to offer support in Brisbane or Sydney, but if the client doesn't have its own IT manager or if it's in Bourke in far western NSW or even Ireland or Germany, reliability becomes paramount," said Sam Patane, CEO of Libero. "The next biggest issue for us is speed, in terms of the database being able to handle large programs with complex processes and still provide the almost instant response people expect today. CACHÉ excels on both criteria."

"Members of the library as well as staff get immediate results, meeting the high levels of service delivery that library staff and Council believe is important to the people of Cairns," said Ms Still.

Libero is an Australian owned and designed Library Management System, which is quick and very flexible. Libero is used in Public, Corporate, Academic and Government Libraries with catalogues ranging from 5,000 to 8 million bibliographic records and has been tested with databases containing over 30 million bibliographic records. Libero is built to scale from the smallest to the largest of library services and offers an exceptional number of modules aimed at streamlining all facets of a library organisation.
