Hewlett-Packard

With four-megapixel image quality, HP's Photosmart 812 is ideal for enthusiasts, while the Photosmart 120's simple features cater for first-time digital camera users. The 812 produces enlargements up to 279x432mm and offers 21x total zoom, featuring a Pentax precision lens with 3x optical and 7x digital zoom to deliver clear results. Users can pre-program 14 destinations to send photos from the Photosmart 812 when connected to a PC or dock. Destinations include PC, printer, e-mail addresses, storage devices or television. The unit operates on AA batteries but NiMH batteries are optional and can be recharged in the camera. HP's Photosmart 120 features 1-megapixel image quality and 2x digital zoom. Its 30-second video capture capability is increased to 70 seconds with an 8MB CompactFlash card or 140 seconds with a 16MB card. The HP Photosmart 812 retails for $1,299 with the dock and the 120 for $299 (including GST). Both cameras have a one-year hardware warranty.

Canon

Canon's PowerShot A200 enhances its entry-level line-up of digital still cameras and is the clear choice for consumers wanting the very best image quality from a first digital camera. Housed within a sleek capsule, the PowerShot A200 is packed with features such as primary filters, movie recording and photo effects modes (including vivid colour, neutral colour, low sharpening, sepia, and black and white). With its 2-megapixel CCD sensor and Canon's high-resolution fixed-focal length, auto focus, and 5mm f2.8 lens, the PowerShot A200 takes great photos with vibrant colours and sharp details in any situation. The A200 runs on AA batteries and is supplied with image converters, Apple QuickTime and Canon ZoomBrowser (PC), ImageBrowser (Mac), RemoteCapture, PhotoStitch and PhotoRecord. The PowerShot A200 will be available in early July with an RRP of $599.

Lexmark

The new Lexmark Z-series includes six models of varying specs, aimed to deliver speed, performance, resolution and quality to business and home users. At the entry level, the Z25 suits the occasional user while the Z65, coupled with the Z65n networkable inkjet, caters for the more experienced hand. The range boasts the highest resolution on the market with the Lexmark Z65 capable of 4800x1200dpi and the Z55 capable of 3600x1200dpi. The Z-series is compatible with most operating systems including Windows and Mac OS. The Z25 retails for $129; the Z65 for $599; and the Z65n networkable inkjet for $699. Mittoni

The Optical Mouse with Flash Readers is an ingeniously designed USB Optical Wheel Mouse, which comes with a built-in dual CompactFlash and SmartMedia Card reader and writer. It allows the two cards to be inserted simultaneously and to drag and drop files from either card to the hard disk drive and back with the speed that the USB port provides. As well as the dual CompactFlash and SmartMedia Card reader (RRP $78), the range includes other variations such as optical mouse with built-in CompactFlash card reader and writer (RRP $66); built-in Memory Stick card reader and writer (RRP $79); and built-in Secure Digital SD and MultiMedia Card MMC reader and writer (RRP $79). Compatible with Windows 98/98SE/ME/2000/XP, the full speed is USB1.1-compatible with an 850Kbps data transfer rate.

Kodak

Kodak has broadened its range of consumables to include inkjet-compatible photographic paper. Available in two grades, Kodak Picture Paper allows users to create quality high gloss or satin finish prints at home. The two-sided sheets are perfect for photo albums. The paper is suitable for all inkjet printers. Picture Paper retails for $9.95 (10 sheets) or $19.95 (25 sheets). Premium Picture Paper retails for $19.95 (15 sheets).

Axis Network Cameras

Axis Communications manufactures a range of Internet Protocol (IP) addressable network cameras to capture and relay live images, such as dynamic Web attractions, monitoring, security and surveillance. Unlike webcams, they contain all of the image processing, operating system, software and networking technology within the camera, eliminating the need for a PC. The Axis Network Camera uses chip technology to send pictures to e-mail destinations, Web servers or networked storage either on demand, on alarm, or at timed intervals. The cameras can be viewed in real-time using a standard Web browser connected to the Internet on any operating platform - Mac, Windows, Linux, etc. Each camera is assigned its own IP address making it viewable from anywhere in the world (security privileges permitting). Optional accessories include an audio module to transmit sound as well as images over IP networks. The Axis camera range consists of five models, priced from $1,050.

Panasonic

Panasonic has developed a new digital still camera range called Lumix, which combines world-renowned Leica lenses with advanced digital imaging technology. The range incorporates four models. The DMC-LC5 and DMC-LC40 use the top-of-the range Leica DC Vario-Summicron lens, while the DMC-F7 and DMC-LC20 use the compact DC Vario-Elmarit lens. They feature pure colour engine LSI for excellent colour reproduction, built-in USB ports and Secure Digital memory card slots. The DMC-LC5 and DMC-LC40 feature 4-megapixel CCDs (3.9 mega-effective pixels) and a 64MB card holds up to six minutes of moving images with audio (320x240 pixels, 10 frames per second). The DMC-F7 and DMC-LC20 both have a 2.1-megapixel CCD (2.0 mega-effective pixels) and can record up to 20 seconds of moving images. Pricing is $769 for the DMC-LC20, $989 for the DMC-F7, $1,649 for the DMC-LC40, and $1979 for the DMC-LC5.
