Toshiba has announced the release of its 2GB type II PC-Card hard disk. The device, which is the size of a stack of three credit cards and weighs 55 grams, can accommodate anything from 5000 PowerPoint files to 60 minutes of MPEG video, making it ideal for backing up notebook data and sharing large multimedia files between users. Additionally, the card does not need a power adapter or driver - Windows automatically recognises the hardware. The card can be locked with a password, helping the ongoing problem of data security in regard to notebooks - large amounts of data can be stored separately from the notebook, which could be more vulnerable to theft or capture. Toshiba believes sales of the card could reach 100,000 within two years. Although a Toshiba product, the device works on most vendors' notebooks and is backed by a 30-day money-back guarantee. It will retail for $549 and is available immediately.
