Queensland gets new ICT minister

Previous ICT minister stepped down and announced retirement by the next election

The Queensland Labor Government has named Simon Finn as its new ICT minister after a cabinet reshuffle by Premier Anna Bligh.

The reshuffle came after the previous ICT minister, Robert Schwarten, stepped down from cabinet and said he would not contest the next election.

“The Premier needs a clear run at the next election, she needs a minister in there that's going to be part of her team when she goes to the election, and I won't be there,” he told ABC Radio when retiring.

The Premier said the new cabinet would have to deal with the tough task of rebuilding Queensland after floods and cyclones devastated large tracts of the state.

“My message to the new Cabinet is clear: We each have two priorities this year – rebuilding and delivering,” she said in a statement.

Simon Finn will also be responsible for Government Services and the building industry.

He joins at an especially tough time for the State’s ICT department with an embarrassing payroll software disaster in Queensland’s health system yet to be completely resolved.
