Anti-NBN arguments backed up by Greenhill report: Turnbull

Coalition criticises the Greenhill Caliburn report’s lack of breadth

Shadow Communications Minister, Malcolm Turnbull, has used the independent report by Greenhill Caliburn into NBN Co’s business case, to back up his arguments against the National Broadband Network.

The Greenhill Caliburn report said the company responsible for the National Broadband Network’s rollout, NBN Co, had produced a “reasonable” business plan according to high professional standards with the level of detail and analysis expected from large listed public entities.

“Taken as a whole, the Corporate Plan for the development of the NBN is reasonable,” the report said. “Key assumptions underlying revenue and cost projections appear to be in line with a range of available domestic and international benchmarks.”

But Turnbull described Communications Minister, Senator Stephen Conroy, as a latter day Basil Fawlty and said the report admitted ‘mobile centric’ broadband networks could seriously undermine the viability of the NBN.

He also described the Greenhill report’s support for the NBN as “grudging” and lacked answers for a range of critical areas.

“This report, like the other multi-million dollar consultants' reports the Government has commissioned, fails to address the single most important issue: what is the most cost-effective way to ensure that all Australians have access to high speed and affordable broadband?” he said in a statement.

“It is clear that the Government has gotten what it paid for in this report. The only way to really know if taxpayers will get what they are paying for with the NBN is to subject it to a thorough cost benefit analysis.”

He called on Conroy to explain why the full report was not being released to the public.

ARN contacted the office of Communications Minister, Senator Stephen Conroy, but did not get a response by time of publication.
