New malware vendor hits town

FireEye inks distribution agreement with WhiteGold

US-based malware protection vendor, FireEye has expanded into Australian shores, setting up an office in Sydney.

The vendor, which is headed up locally by Charlie Cote, has also inked a local distribution deal with WhiteGold Solutions.

Prior to setting up the FireEye office in Sydney, Cote helped to establish a local presence for network security vendor, Fortinet.

“I’m leveraging my experience to go to channel partners that we want to work with to help build a successful business,” Cote said. “There’s not one particular vertical that we’re isolated to. We can work with a breadth of enterprise organisations because of the capabilities of our product.”

FireEye has an invitation only partner program in place. It consists of silver and gold levels, and contains a deal registration component that offers deal protection. Partners are required to achieve certain targets to retain their status.

“We want a few targeted strategic partners that will work closely with us, so we can protect their margins, make sure they’re skilled up on our gear and build a positive, constructive partnership together,” he said. “We want to work with partners that have security focused practice.”

Cote said he was in cusp of signing up five partners during the next month.

“We’re looking at a few key partners regionally across Victoria, NSW and Queensland, with the potential of having a partner that may work national,” he said.

FireEye was founded in 2004 and is headquartered in Silicon Valley.

The vendor recently hired Richard Thornton as its systems engineer.

He will be focused on channel enablement and end-user awareness, doing proof-of-concepts, evaluations, training and assisting with installations. Prior to joining FireEye, Thornton previously worked for Palo Alto.

Cote said he was looking to recruit an inside sales person.

“Over the next six to nine months, we’ll be looking to continue to build our awareness in the enterprise market, new customer acquisition and growing the team,” he said.

WhiteGold managing director, Dominic Whitehand, said FireEye specifically focused on malware specifically and offered a new technology to address it. “It’s one of many changes that we’ll be making this year in terms of new technologies that we’re looking at and growing our team, adding new product managers and growing the team in each state,” Whitehand said.
