The National Broadband Network (NBN), rising salary expectations and recruiting migrant workers are topics that will dominate next year’s IT job market, according to a recruitment firm.
With the economy in a healthy state, the job market is experiencing a high but skills shortages still plague the IT industry and will define the IT job market in 2011, Hays IT regional director, Peter Noblet, said.
The finding skills for the $35.7 billion NBN has been cited an issue to look out for next year.
“We are now meeting with employers who honestly believe they will not be able to find the IT skills they need in Australia as a result of the NBN,” Noblet said. “The NBN is also expected to push up contract rates in IT in response to the shortage of skills.”
With NBN and telco-related projects expected to be ramped up next year, companies will be fighting to recruit and keep talent.
"We are seeing a massive range of programs currently in the mobile sector as well as in large enterprises, that is organisations using networks and so on," Noblet said. "Network design and architecture space, senior engineers for carriage service providers in large enterprises as well and skills within Cisco, Juniper and Nokia technologies are going to be pretty key within the area."
While overseas skilled migrants will ward off some of the skills shortage pressure, retention of IT staff will plague employers next year. But the process of recruiting migrant workers is expected to be expedited on the back of announcements this year by the Federal Government on new visa processes for the resource sector.
This is expected to bump migrant worker rates in Australia up.
Salary expectations by employees have also increased in a post-global financial crisis environment and this is expected to continue to rise throughout 2011.
Other notable issues for IT recruitment next year were employee bonuses and social media influences.
