Cisco lands EnergyAustralia smart grid infrastructure deal

Cisco Connected Grid solution will be the infrastructure platform for the delivery of a range of services

Cisco has struck a deal with EnergyAustralia to deliver smart grid infrastructure.

EnergyAustralia has selected Cisco to provide the its Connected Grid solution as the infrastructure platform for the delivery of a range of services in its major substations across its electricity network.

Cisco joins IBM in the smart grid game with EnergyAustralia, however the two vendor giants are not collaborating on this specific solution at this stage.

This represents the vendor’s first smart grid project locally. However, Cisco general manager for utilities, David Loy, said the vendor had high hopes for future channel engagement.

“Around three years ago we decided to focus a team on the smart grid,” Loy said. “Our initial strategy was to pick five utilities to work with globally. We see a lot of opportunity for advanced technology partners, or organisations already in this space to engage with us.”

Cisco partners, Netstarlogicalis and Logica, were two examples of channel organisations with a strong smart grid play, Loy said.
