Birks joins IT innovation council

AIIA CEO, Ian Birks, has joined the Australian Government’s Information Technology Industry Innovation Council

AIIA CEO, Ian Birks, has become a member of the Australian Government’s Information Technology Industry Innovation Council.

“I am delighted to accept this opportunity to work with the Government and a wide range of industry stakeholders to help realise the potential that technology innovation now offers the Australian economy,” Birks said.

Innovation Councils work to promote a culture of innovation in specific industry sectors across Australia. The IT Innovation Council sits alongside seven other councils ranging from manufacturing to the built environment.

“Technology innovation is widely recognised as a driver of productivity and innovation across almost every industry sector. Developing a powerful culture of innovation within the sector is not only vital to the future of competitive ICT in Australia, but also to the future of the economy as a whole,” he said.

“In an increasingly dynamic and competitive global economy, technology innovation will be essential to achieving the productivity improvements necessary to sustain Australia’s wealth and expansion in a diverse range of international markets. It will be central to delivering a return on any investment we make in Broadband infrastructure and it will be the cornerstone of a genuine digital economy in Australia in the future.”

A key role for the Council is championing the role technology plays in creating and stimulating Australia’s innovation capability in creating new businesses and transforming existing ones and in developing solutions to broader social, economic and environmental concerns.

Council members are drawn from industry, unions, business, research and government.

In setting its agenda for the next three years, the Council has committed to some ambitious goals.

From maximising the opportunities for IT development through the NBN, through to developing world class R&D and education systems, IT skills development supported by the right professional structures and stimulating and enabling an entrepreneurial small business sector, the Council is adopting a pro-active change agenda.

“This is a pivotal time for technology innovation in Australia and I am very excited to begin work with the IT Industry Innovation Council in these areas,” he said.
