Abbott: I won’t rip up Tasmanian NBN

Opposition leader acknowledges NBN support, but labels it a “gift funded by debt”.

Opposition leader, Tony Abbott, has promised not to dismantle any National Broadband Network infrastructure already rolled out in Tasmania.

According to AAP reports, Abbott made the comments in his first visit to the state since the Federal Election. The leader was there to launch the Tasmanian Liberal Party conference in Launceston.

“I understand that before the election there was a bit of enthusiasm for this policy here in Tasmania,” he said. "The last thing I would want to do is damage or detract from any new infrastructure that might actually have been rolled out.

'Ladies and gentlemen, this looks like a gift but it is a gift that we will be paying for again and again, our children and their children.

"It is a gift funded by debt that we must repay. It is a gift that does not give. That is the problem with this nationalised broadband network.''
