Former Newcastle call centre owner fined $5940

62 workers underpaid - problems still not rectified

The owner of a Newcastle call centre had been fined $5940 over the underpayment of 62 workers.

The Federal Magistrates Court in Sydney has ordered the penalty against Andre Praglowski, who had run an outbound call centre out of Newcastle through the company Country Hospitality Pty Ltd.

The 62 telemarketers were underpaid a total of $38,895 in the three years between 2006 and 2009. These underpayments have not been rectified.

In a release on the Fair Work Ombudsman website, Federal Magistrate Driver said “penalties in this case should be imposed on a meaningful level so as to deter other employers from committing similar contraventions".

The fine comes despite Praglowski placing Country Hospitality into voluntary liquidation in June this year.
