Telstra supports its own separation through Government Bill

Thodey pushes for the bill to pass before putting it before Telstra shareholders

Telstra has released a statement supporting a Government Bill that would push for its structural separation. The comments come at a crucial point as the Bill gets introduced into Parliament.

“We believe the interests of Telstra shareholders would be best served by the bill being passed this year so that a definitive agreement on our involvement in the NBN can be reached quickly,” Telstra CEO, David Thodey, said in the statement.

The Bill now provides the mechanisms needed to secure agreements with the Government and NBN Co regarding Telstra's participation in the NBN and provides much greater certainty on access to fourth generation wireless spectrum,” the statement added.

Telstra and the Government signed a financial heads of agreement in June. The Bill has been amended with this in mind, but the telco cannot act on it until the Government has passed the proposed legislation.

ARN contacted the office of Shadow Communications Minister, Malcolm Turnbull for further comment. A statement is expected later this afternoon.
