Sonatype enhancing cloud-based software repository

Maven Central is a major resource for the exchange of Java artifacts

Sonatype is enhancing its Maven Central cloud-based software component repository in the areas of performance, availability, and security.

Maven Central was launched in 2005 and has become the principal resource for the exchange of Java artifacts, Sonatype said. To boost performance worldwide, Sonatype on Tuesday will have mirror sites in Europe and Asia. Also, submissions to Maven Central will begin using a streamlined process that leverages Sonatype's Nexus open source repository manager, offering improved security and more comprehensive project statistics, Sonatype said.

Other planned improvements include enhancing infrastructure in the US to provide high availability and accelerated investment in the site interface and repository management.

"Sonatype places enormous value on the collaborative relationship that we have with the open source community, and we are proud that we are able to deliver even greater resources to software developers moving forward," said Jason van Zyl, Sonatype's founder and CTO, in a statement released by the company.

Maven Central receives more than 70 million hits from 250,000 developers each week, Sonatype said. Traffic in 2010 is expected to reach more than 4 billion hits.

Sonaypte also offers the Nexus Professional repository manager to manage artifact repositories and provision them in Maven Central.
