iiNet buys VMware for major email cloud

Every single iiNet customer set to get moved to new system by January 2011

Australian telco, iiNet, has purchased more than 1 million cloud-based email mailboxes from tech vendor, VMware. Every single iiNet customer will automatically be moved to the new system between October 2010 and January 2011.

According to a statement from VMware, the deal is the first time VMware’s mailbox product, Zimbra, has had a major service provider deal in Australia.

“This landmark deal expands our strong relationship with iiNet beyond the virtualisation of its IT infrastructure to providing flexible enterprise-class email and collaboration solutions that will directly impact iiNet's customer,” VMware managing director, Paul Harapin, said.

The Zimbra platform is already being used by 25 per cent of iiNet’s customers. Its “business-grade” email solution from VMware has been offered since May.

The vendor also claimed Zimbra was built on open-source technology to let iiNet merge its various email platforms into a single system.
