Comdex Sydney rumours scoffed at

The space is booked and the vendors are interested, but the rumours continue to fly about an Australian Comdex in 2000.

Alex Feher, managing director of Ziff-Davis Events Australia, which organises the show, scotched the news last week that a Sydney Comdex had been given the green light.

"We are doing research and talking to vendors, but we don't want to offend the market," Feher said. "We need a chorus of support before we go ahead."

Feher admitted Ziff had verbally received a number of offers, but hadn't yet received any firm commitments. Ziff-Davis has booked "about 15,000 gross square metres" at Sydney's Darling Harbour exhibition centre for the first half of 2000, Feher said.

He said it was possible that Networld + Interop would be combined with Comdex to make a "super" exhibition. Feher said the event would have to be "totally reinvented to succeed" in the Australian market.

There are currently 15 Comdex exhibitions annually around the world, with the peak event held in Las Vegas each November. There are events in Brazil, Korea, Miami, South Africa, Singapore, the UK, Quebec, Mexico and India.
