University high-bandwidth network calls for SIs

Australian Advanced Research Network (AARNet) has put out a request for proposal for the implementation of the Sydney Basin Fibre Network project on behalf of five universities in Sydney.

Sydney University, the University of New South Wales, University of Technology Sydney, Macquarie University and the University of Western Sydney were awarded a $1.6 million grant by the Commonwealth Department of Education, Training and Youth Affairs last year to build a high-speed fibre network between each institution.

The network is intended to link information technology and communications research facilities between universities as well as the Australian Centre for Advanced Computing and Communications (AC3).

The high-speed network will also enable collaborative teaching exercises. Installation is slated to begin in early 2002, with systems integrators required to submit requests for proposal by December 24.
