Moreton Bay secures Link Security for IP video surveillance

The security integrator won the tender to roll out the largest IP video surveillance network in Australia

Security integrator, Link Security Group, has rolled out a wireless IP video surveillance network for the Moreton Bay Regional Council.

Spanning 130 square kilometres, it is the most extensive network of its kind in Australia, according to Link Security.

The integrator won the tender to build the network in early 2010 as part of the Federal Government’s Safer Cities program.

Moreton Bay Regional Council in Queensland, which covers a population of 370,000, had specific requirements for IP network as it wanted a total wireless solution, integrated cameras with audio capabilities as well as a number plate recognition system. It also wanted the network to be able to withstand rough weather, vandalism and deployed within a tight timeframe.

Link Security was chosen for its commitment to wireless as the council rejected a fibre-based system.

The integrator selected two primary suppliers for the project: Axis for robust cameras with high-definition resolution recording capabilities and Firetide to provide equipment for the wireless mesh infrastructure. Around 50 IP cameras were used.

Rollout began in June and is due to be finished next month.

“Initially, there was a lot of civil work involved to install custom built camera poles on the sides of roads and in traffic areas,” Link Security managing director, Luke Morgan, said. “Then we had electricity transferred to the poles and connect to Energex [one of Queensland’s energy provider] feeder as well as create applications with Energex to have those poles connected.

“Once that was done, we attached our box to the side of the poles and all the electronics go into it. Then we underwent testing and positioning of the system.”

Morgan saw this project as a good example to present to councils that want to get on-board with a wireless security system.

“It is really good to see the councils moving with the technology and are taking our advice on that,” he said.

The integrator is currently contending for another three local council tenders for wireless IP security camera work.

Link Security was unable to disclose the value of the project.
