Oracle denies Y2K bug link

Retail chain David Jones has uncovered a bug that affects Oracle databases running on Digital's 64-bit Alpha platform.

Speculation the bug is associated with the year 2000 date issue was labelled "inaccurate" by an Oracle spokesman. "What they have been experiencing is a problem with the correct reporting of minutes and seconds," said Oracle Australia's product sales and marketing manager Dave McNaughton.

Oracle databases have a storage data type that combines date and time.

In porting the database to the 64-bit system, "some sort of error" occurred which resulted in minutes and seconds being inaccurately stored and reported, he said.

The problem has been solved and the issue has been resolved with the retailer, McNaughton said.
