A massive eight-month operation involving the consolidation of warehouse and service facilities for NEC Australia's two personal products group (PPG) divisions - information systems (IS) and home electronics (HE) - is now complete.
After major redevelopment of the site previously occupied solely by NEC HE, a mammoth four-day shift involving 46 semi-trailer loads transported NEC IS's national warehousing and service operations from Alexandria on Sydney's city fringe to the Revesby site in Sydney's south-west.
As the mobile phone servicing operation has also been relocated from Frenchs Forest, this centralising is one of the clearest manifestations yet of the company's Australia-wide amalgamation plan, a concept that has been in the pipeline since December 1996.
With all PPG operations now based at the expanded, redesigned and refurbished Revesby site, the global electronics giant is claiming a 24 per cent reduction in site operating costs and 16 per cent boost in overall productivity.
Such positive results from the streamlining of operations are expected to deliver noticeable cost savings for NEC's channel partners and resellers as well as improved customer service and reduced turnaround times on order fulfilment.
According to Greg Berrington, NEC Australia's personal products group business planning manager, Logistics, the benefits to NEC's resellers are twofold.
"From the resellers point of view there will be very real benefits in service turnaround times and spares availability as well as the delivery of finished products," Berrington says.
"Consolidating all the divisions together onto one site will provide NEC's resellers with a one-stop shop for service, warranty and spares availability. We will be able to improve our levels of service through improved efficiency as well as offering our client base the convenience of just one location."
The new home of NEC's PPG includes a much larger preparation area with dramatically improved assembly facilities where up to 250 PCs and 50 servers can be assembled, tested and dispatched per day.
"While only running one shift a day at the moment, we have the capacity to go to three shifts a day if we need to which is the longer term outlook," says Berrington.
Meanwhile, the new administration and workshop areas at Revesby have been effectively doubled to 2000 square metres while there is now an additional 3000 square metres of new high-rise warehousing space (up to 10,500 square metres).
These expansions include new loading and dispatch docks, new spare parts storage facilities for more efficient spare parts recovery and quicker turnaround at the counter and a 100-vehicle car park.
