Altiris is beefing up its security portfolio to now offer end point security products.
The vendor, better known for its systems management and compliance software, is looking to go live with its new Endpoint Security Solution in August.
The product, which will retail for $114 per node, offers protection in five key areas: Wi-Fi connectivity; removable USB devices, where access to read and write to such devices will be permission based; a client-based Firewall; application integrity; and application enforcement.
An example of the latter would be if a user was in a cafe and seeking access to wireless Internet. In this case, the software would detect the user was out of their protected corporate WLAN, and thus ensure access first went through a VPN before connecting to the Internet.
Security and compliance product manager for Altiris, Jim Barker, said the company had initially had two security offerings in its product line-up: a patch management product and a compliance audit tool. By the end of this year it would expand that selection to eight.
He said selling into an already crowded marketplace would not be easy.
"It is a tough battle when you are not a company like Symantec that has always been in security," Barker said. "But our aim is to create more mindshare around security and Altiris."
