FileMaker has just released its new database software, FileMaker Pro 6.0, which features XML support for importing and exporting files across multiple applications.
"In the past, databases have relied on a driver. That's fine, but the downside is drivers cost money; they have to be compatible and keeping it all up-to-date is difficult," said Steve McManus, FileMaker general manager for Asia-Pacific, yet "XML is free".
Applications that use XML can talk to each other, which means the new software can export data to e-mail programs or spreadsheets. It also features new templates to help boost the productivity of its customers - namely small and medium businesses.
"The new software helps give small businesses some of the database functionality of larger enterprises," McManus said. "It can be the application that marries all these [applications]. I think that is a great thing for resellers - it gives them something to run with."
FileMaker has also announced a site to help developers capitalise on the opportunities of application integration. FileMaker XML Central is a library of more than 40 stylesheets for translating XML grammars to complement the eight sheets included with the software.
FileMaker Pro 6 is distributed by Tech Pacific. The Unlimited Version carries a retail price of $2200 and $275 for an upgrade from 5.0 or 5.5 Unlimited Versions. Volume licensing is also available.www.filemaker.com/xml.
