It seems long hours are the norm these days for most people with ambitions of being successful. In fact, most of us are working so hard that we rarely have time to step back and take stock of whether we are moving in the right direction. While the work ethic is commendable, it isn't always good for business.
With that in mind, I would like to use this week's column to draw your attention to two new events coming up in the months ahead.
The first is the ARN IT Industry Awards '07 dinner, which will be held at Doltone House in Sydney on September 26. IDG Communications has been publishing ARN (originally Reseller) since 1991 and we pride ourselves on helping the channel to be successful. Now we will go one step further and shine a spotlight on the industry's top performers.
Voting is now open for a wide range of reseller, distributor and vendor categories so I urge you to visit http://www.arnnet.com.au/index.php/aid;51 and have your say. We also have a number of Green Channel awards (which will recognise the efforts of companies and individuals that are making a difference to the environment) and some Personal Innovation awards for Sales Excellence, Technical Excellence and Customer Service.
A floating panel of more than 30 channel professionals will pick the winners from a shortlist of finalists drawn up by senior members of the ARN team and Channel Dynamics director, Moheb Moses. Last, but certainly not least, our Channel Choice awards cover four categories: Vendor, Distributor and Reseller of the Year as well as the Hall of Fame. These are populist awards.
They will be presented to the companies that get the most votes in each category and an individual (past or present) who has played a significant role in the development of the local IT channel. A few candidates spring readily to my mind but I'm sure those of you who have been in this industry for many years will be able to come up with a much more comprehensive list. When the winners have been decided, the awards will be presented at the ARN IT Industry Awards '07 dinner.
This will be a fantastic opportunity for us all to celebrate the best examples of channel excellence during the past 12 months.
The other event I want to mention this week is SMB Focus. This two day channel conference will offer a slightly different twist on the seemingly endless number of events you are invited to because it is run by resellers for resellers.
Instead of vendor reps inflicting death by PowerPoint, it will encourage resellers to take a couple of days away from their business in order to look at ways of working smarter rather than harder. As the saying goes, 'Sometimes you need to work on the business rather than in the business.'
