HP ships its first Athlon 4 notebook

Hewlett-Packard (HP) has quietly launched a notebook based on Advanced Micro Devices' Athlon 4 mobile processor, following closely on the heels of Compaq, which launched a notebook based on the processor last month.

At least one retailer has started offering HP's Pavilion notebook, featuring a 1GHz Athlon processor, a combination DVD (digital versatile disc) and CR-RW (compact disk-rewritable) drive and 256M-bytes of SDRAM (synchronous dynamic RAM). Electronics vendor Best Buy Co. has the notebook, which also features a 15-inch TFT (thin film transistor) display and a 20G-byte hard drive, offered on its Web page for $US2,199.

Although the notebook is currently available from Best Buy, HP will formally launch the notebook at next week's TechXNY show in New York, an HP spokesman said.

Shortly after last month's launch of the Atlhon 4, Compaq rolled out its own Atlhon-based Presario 1200, priced at $1,599.
