LG is voluntarily recalling some of its DVD and refrigerator products after they were found to cause electronic shocks.
According to the electronics and whitegoods company’s local statement, a select number of portable DVD players and refrigerators may “cause minor electric shock” to users. The DVD players had been sold since June 2008 and include the DP392G, DP351G and DP450G range. The products have been removed from sale.
LG said there was a risk the universal power adapter may come off the plug pins if excessive force is applied, which could cause electric shocks. Customers can contact LG directly for a replacement power adaptor.
With its side-by-side refrigerators, LG said the earthing screw used to fasten the main earth wire was faulty. This resulted in reduced insulation from electricity passing through and could also cause minor electric shocks, it stated. The refrigerators, which were only sold between April 2009 and June 2009, in question are:
- Dispenser Model Numbers GC-B197WFI, GC-B197STS and GC-B19ACF
- Dispenser Model Numbers GC-L197HFS, GC-L197NFS and GC-P197WFS
LG spokesperson, Ken Hong, said the issue was flagged by external source and was investigated internally. He could not specify the where the information came from but said it could have be from a customer report to a consumer regulator.
“We are taking a very proactive approach here because we think safety is our biggest priority,” Hong said.
According to the company, no injuries have been reported as a result of the defective products.
LG is offering to repair the fridges for free and will provide $200 in compensation for potential loss of refrigerated goods. Customers will also get a 50 per cent discount on the next LG product they buy with a maximum discount value of $1000.
All affected products have been removed from the shelves. According to the vendor, the products pose minimum risk for consumers but it was still determined to issue the recall.
“We have become aware of two of our products – including some models of side-by-side door fridges and portable DVD player power adapter – failing to meet our own high standards and posing a potential risk to consumer safety,” LG said in a statement.
“We sincerely apologise and are taking every possible action to remove the risks these products pose from Australian homes and retailers, resolve the problems with minimal inconvenience to our consumers, and put in place measures to ensure these problems do not occur again.”
Customers carrying any one of the products listed should call LG on 1800 5006 154.
