State of the market

  • Mining stocks helped the markets to an early rise, but they quickly fell with no guiding data from Wall St. That instability continued all day. At close of trading, the S&P/ASX200 was down 49.9 points at 4861.2.
  • The Aussie dollar is steady on $US0.9262. Gold sells for $US1131 an ounce while oil is steady at $US78.2 a barrel.
