HiTech gets secure with new website

HiTech Distribution is in the final stages of constructing a new website for its resellers.

The distributor's marketing manager, David Hein, said dealers were currently limited in the way they ordered stock through its existing website.

"On the current site you can look up pricing, availability, check back orders and so on," he said. "But you're limited in that there's no secure online transaction features."

As a result, dealers would have to remember which goods they had ordered, then copy and paste them into the online form, Hein said. At the other end, HiTech would have to enter the details into their own internal systems.

With the new website, he said, the entire process would be fully automated through a "checkout" style function.

"Our aim is to make it a more useful resource, rather than providing just info," he said.

The website will also feature full administration functionality, allowing resellers to nominate their own administrators to manage and customise their user accounts, as well as create customisable quotation templates.

Other improvements include ready-made newsletters on products for resellers to use on their own websites.

"It will be a do-it-yourself newsletter for the dealer," Hein said. "Dealers can bring their own logo and send it out to their own customer base. It's ideal for those without marketing teams."

In the long term, HiTech would look providing more advanced e-business features, such as integration between its site and the reseller's own systems, he said.

The reseller-only site is expected to be launched in the first quarter of this year.

While suggesting it was unrealistic to expect all sales to go online, Hein said the distributor expected a majority of sales would eventually be Web-based.

"We get a number of orders online now, but not as many as we would like," he said. "Still, we get hundreds of orders per month. This will rise dramatically when the new site has gone up."
