Managers go it alone in security buyout

Frustrated at not being able to grasp market opportunities, the management team of Norman Data Defense Systems has decided to go it alone, buying out the sales and support arm of the Norway-based data security company.

The new organisation - dubbed Capital Security Solutions - will focus on growing the sales of Norman's range of security products across Australia. It will be headed by former operations manager Mark Karpinski.

Norman Data Defense Systems has been a player in the data security market since 1995. It was originally set up as a development arm of the company but, according to Karpinski, the opportunities to grow in Australia have not been fully exploited.

"We expect the data security market to increase quite substantially over the next 12 months," he said. "The new privacy laws will make our jobs easier because companies will be forced to protect their data."

Norman markets products for risk analysis, virus control, access, encryption, network security and data recovery. Capital will handle all of the sales and support for Norman Data Defense Systems, which will concentrate on bringing new offerings into the Australian market.

"A number of new products and upgrades are in the pipeline and this new arrangement means we can concentrate all our efforts on introducing them," said Norman Australia's managing director, Mike Wynd.

And with an eye to expanding sales, Capital Security Solutions is also looking to expand its reseller base and increase its penetration in the local market.

"Our strategy is to establish an additional network of channel partners," Karpinski said. "We will of course continue to work concurrently with our existing Norman reseller network."

Karpinski declined to comment on the financial details of the management buyout, but he said the transition was "extremely seamless".

"We still have all the same people, the same address and the same phone number. We have notified our users by e-mail and letter mailouts. I think they will have no problems dealing with the new company."
