IBM releases new Tivoli suite of management tools

With new predictive capabilities, data warehousing functions, a layer-2 switch analyser and root cause analysis tools, IBM's Tivoli Systems software line is getting a significant upgrade.

The new Tivoli monitoring and management tools, to be released this month, mark an effort by IBM to fuse network and systems management into a sensible whole. "A lot of what we're trying to do is offer a simpler product line," said Carl Kessler, vice president for Tivoli products.

Using IBM's DB2 database software, all Tivoli monitoring tools will come with a built-in data warehousing function so all network and systems data can be kept in a single repository.

Tivoli also integrated the Net View network monitoring tool with its Tivoli Enterprise Console for systems integration, joining rivals such as BMC Software, Hewlett-Packard and Computer Associates in merging those two monitoring functions.

Tivoli also trimmed its offerings. For instance, it will offer a single monitoring tool for Web infrastructure application servers rather than separate products for IBM's WebSphere, BEA Systems' WebLogic and application servers from Oracle and the Apache Software Foundation.

"This is our big push for 2002," Kessler said of the product line overhaul.

In a separate release, Tivoli announced the availability of the free IBM Tivoli Privacy Wizard, which will help companies define their privacy policies.
