Datacom Wins IT Industry Green Award

For the third year in succession, Datacom has been successful in securing the Australian IT Industry ARN Green Channel – Green Project of the year award. This highlights Datacom’s efforts in driving social responsibility and environmental best practice into its business.

The award comes on the back of a successful year of growth for Datacom where it grew revenues by over $100M and in May announced that it had been awarded the contract to provide a range of IT services to the federal government agency, the Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts (DEWHA).

Datacom was nominated for the award due to the “green focus” of the tender for this contract – greener computing, reduced power usage and virtualisation. The tender required Datacom to not only demonstrate what they would do for the Department but also what they would commit to in their own business operations.

In a recent speech, Peter Garrett, one of the agency’s two Ministers, stated, “You will be pleased to hear that a new era of sustainability is happening with my own department, as we aim to lead by example, to be the first in the Australian Government to specify a green focus as part of its information technology services contract. The department was looking not just for sustainability in the IT services provided by a contractor, but also in its own operations.”

Datacom focused primarily on energy and water use and also on other operational aspects of the business such as waste, office supplies, carbon footprint and transport. They introduced energy efficient lighting, implemented the use of free air cooling to reduce the use of air-conditioning in their data centre and focused on conducting practical awareness and skills training with staff to educate their workforce on how to make the home and office a greener place.

At its new $45M Datacentre complex in Auckland, Datacom sets new standards in environmental best practice. This world-best-class facility, built from the ground up by Datacom, leads the way in the use of environmentally friendly building materials, reduction in the use of copper through careful placement of Datacentre plant and an energy efficiency rating that is at the forefront of the industry.

Datacom’s CEO Michael Browne stated that “we are delighted to have received this award for the third successive year. It really highlights that we are on the right path with our social and environmental programmes supported by our highly engaged people. As we push towards ISO14001 compliance across our business I am sure you will see many more green initiatives developed and implemented by Datacom.”
