A technical fault brought down Telstra’s Internet network for an hour this morning.
Home, business and mobile Internet users nationwide were denied access to international websites as well as Australian sites with international links. Problems began at 7.48am and were exacerbated as more customers logged online.
Telstra’s engineers commenced an urgent investigation on the outage and traced it back to the telco’s international Web gateway, which is the connection point between Telstra’s broadband network and the wider Internet. The gateway was rebooted and the service was restored at 8.48am.
A Telstra spokesperson said the company does have redundancy systems to keep services afloat but was unsure why the contingency plan did not kick in. The cause of the outage also remains unclear and engineers are still working to solve the case.
