Network Appliance Announces Data ONTAP GX Customer Evaluations, Demonstrates Software at Analyst Day

Combines NetAppĀ® Data ONTAPT and SpinOST Into High-Performance Computing Powerhouse

AUSTRALIA, Sydney - 15 March 2006. Network Appliance, Inc. today announced that it has installed its new high-performance operating system, Data ONTAP GX, at several customer sites. Data ONTAP GX, which will be announced for general availability at a future date, leverages distributed systems technology acquired through the purchase of Spinnaker Networks. Data ONTAP GX customer installations include companies in high performance technical computing markets (HPTC) such as energy, ECAD, and entertainment.

NetApp also demonstrated today its new software system at its annual Analyst Day, held in San Francisco. Using an eight-node NetApp FAS3050 configuration, the Data ONTAP GX technology demonstration illustrated that multiple NetApp storage systems can be managed as a single entity under a global namespace. This enables all members of an application server cluster to access data stored across all of the FAS systems by using a single access point, eliminating the traditional complexities of mapping application servers to storage systems. NetApp also demonstrated how this scale-out architecture is capable of achieving higher levels of aggregate system performance, because data volumes can span multiple storage nodes. Additionally, the demonstration showed how Data ONTAP GX provides the ability to dynamically add storage resources and transparently redistribute data without any disruption to client systems. The result is a storage system that combines the advantages of management simplicity with scalable performance for compute intensive applications.
