Packeteer Free 30-Day Evaluation Program Clearly Demonstrates Benefits Of Application Traffic Management

~ Organisations Like Queensland EPA Can Test Real-World Benefits of Packeteer's Traffic Management and Compression/Acceleration Solutions ~

MELBOURNE, Australia -- May 12, 2004 -- Packeteer®, Inc. (NASDAQ: PKTR), a leading provider of Application Traffic Management solutions, today announced a new program that gives organisations the opportunity to deploy and test Packeteer's award-winning Application Traffic Management system, free for 30 days. The program gives customers a fast and easy way to experience the comprehensive visibility, control and compression capabilities that Packeteer provides for critical voice and data traffic over enterprise WAN links.

"We feel that most organisations that evaluate Packeteer on their WAN will want to keep it there," said Peter Owen, Territory Manager for Packeteer in Australia and New Zealand. "It's just that good. The detailed visibility, control and compression that this system offers improve application performance and reduce bandwidth costs. It's a very straightforward value proposition, but it's still new technology, relative to much of the networking world. We expect that this program will get the system and its benefits in front of more people who are frustrated by inability to see and control traffic on their WANs. It's an increasingly important topic, and we have an extremely effective solution."

The Queensland Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) recently took advantage of the free evaluation program to test Packeteer's compression/acceleration solutions, which are now delivering three times acceleration benefits, combined with traffic management which ensures the performance of mission-critical applications.

"We already used a competing compression/acceleration solution and we needed to test whether Packeteer could deliver similar benefits, in addition to performing traffic management, which we had not been able to implement before," said Michael Suvorovs, a network communications officer engaged with the EPA under Queensland University of Technology's Co-operative Student Program. "Once we had the opportunity to see the benefits for ourselves, we had the confidence to purchase Packeteer's solution."

The free evaluation program is implemented through Packeteer's Australian distributors, Express Data and LAN Systems, and reseller channel, through which the company sells exclusively. It has been made possible in part by the company's free training program, made available to resellers in 2003. The availability of free reseller training has seen the number of trained engineers working in channel organisations quadruple in the last twelve months to around 250.

"We believe the only fair test of the benefits that Packeteer offers is the test that an organisation, in conjunction with a trained reseller, conducts within its own unique environment," said Owen. "Packeteer is extremely fortunate to have the local resources, both in terms of available evaluation equipment and the number of trained engineers within reseller partners, to be able to support such an extensive free evaluation program," he said. "We are the first and only provider of Internet traffic management solutions to make evaluation equipment freely available to end-user organisations through reseller partners."

Packeteer delivers an Application Traffic Management system via intelligent appliances at the LAN/WAN interface. This helps enterprises maximise IT investments by aligning network applications and resources with business needs, and providing significant cost savings in the process.

The Packeteer system protects and accelerates key business applications and controls malicious, recreational and other non-business traffic.

Packeteer's Application Traffic Management solutions automatically detect more than 400 applications and protocols running on an enterprise WAN. With compression enabled, Packeteer's solution ensures that each traffic type is compressed by the algorithm that enhances its performance most.

Based in Cupertino, Calif., Packeteer® (NASDAQ: PKTR) is a leading provider of Application Traffic Management solutions that enable businesses to gain visibility and control of networked applications, extend network resources and align application performance with business priorities. For service providers, Packeteer systems provide a platform for delivering application-intelligent network services that control quality of service, expand revenue opportunities and offer compelling differentiation.
