The BlackDiamond 8900-series modules are designed to extend the vendor’s 8800 series switch for enterprise datacentres. The units enable scalability of 10 gigabit Ethernet for up to 582 10 gigabit Ethernet ports in a single rack, while delivering energy efficiency and value with 3.8TB total switching capacity, Extreme claims. Based on modular network design and ExtremeXOS, the BlackDiamond 8800 series switches provide quick integration and automation of network environments via a Universal Port. The modules also enables XML, CLI and SNMP interfaces through the vendor’s fullfeatured network management tool, EPICentre. This provides customers with a flexible Ethernet networking and management portfolio of tightly integrated tools for managing their next generation data centres. With dynamic energy management features enabled through Extreme Networks open datacentre framework, customers can effectively automate power management capabilities, according to the vendor. This allows power conservation based on variations in demand: For example, during off-peak hours the switch can enter hibernation mode and reduce power consumption by 70 per cent, Extreme claims.
