Printer vendor, Epson, has brought on Region4 as an Australian distributor for its new compact disc burning and printing device.
The Melbourne-based distie will initially be concentrating on the Epson Discproducer, which is a device that can burn up to 100 CDs at a time and customise their artwork, but plans to expand its Epson line-up over time.
“Epson is a refreshing new entrant into a relatively well-established business,” Region4 managing director, Callum Hingston, said. “They are obviously looking to expand over time within the disc-producing family.”
Hingston said the Discproducer will appeal to pro-graphics users thanks to its higher-end features and six ink-tanks.
He claimed that while Region4 has stocked similar machines in the past, the Epson’s features and mid-level pricing would set it apart.
“It’s for people who really are focussed on the running costs over time and the other major thing is that the print quality is exquisite. They’re about in line with most competitors. It’s not underpriced or overpriced, you can go in either direction for a two drive inkjet-based printer,” Hingston said.
He said the distribution deal initially came about as a result of a mutual former colleague and friend, rather than active chasing by either side.
“Their state manager in Victoria who left 12 months ago was a very good friend of mine from when we both used to work in Verbatim. We sort of got introduced by him and when Epson launched its product here the conversations became more frequent,” Hingston said.
“I’m sure they did due diligence and we met with them and all that sort of stuff. They obviously decided that having someone with an established position in the market whose knowledge is very specific in the business was best fit for their new product release.”
Hingston said that Epson would offer a one-year on-site warranty with all machines, negating the need for reseller technical training. Sales-based training will be given to resellers along with sales materials.
“We’ll be providing sample discs, which is always an important one when you’re trying to sell a disc producer, brochures and comparison guides against the other products for doing evaluations,” he said.
