Commander launches promised Web hosting

Listed telephone system provider Commander Communications (formerly Plestel) will deliver the Web-hosting solutions promised during its prospectus last year after signing an agreement with wholesale hosting supplier WebCentral.

WebCentral's wholesale Web-hosting services will be provided to Commander customers as of March, but will be branded under the Commander name. Although the agreement isn't exclusive, deputy managing director of Commander Dean Gingell said given the level of assistance WebCentral is offering, he wouldn't want to go anywhere else.

Gingell said the Commander value add was a new level of billing and customer service. Commander will be able to direct billing enquires for Web site, e-mail or telephony to the one account. He believes Commander's existing telephone system customer base will warm to the simplicity of such an arrangement.

"I think SMEs prefer to speak to one salesman for all their communication needs, and have it all integrated into one bill," he said.

Commander plans to achieve a 10 per cent market share of the Australian Web hosting market by 2004. It's 125,000-strong customer base will be contacted through a telemarketing scheme in coming weeks, as will a variety of potential new customers, Gingell said.
